Comets Look Ahead at a Strong XC Season

The James Lick Cross Country team is hard at work in their summer training phase and completed their first time trial of the year today. The team contested the very hilly and challenging South Rim trail, to test their current fitness levels over the 6 mile course. This Marks the 2nd year that JL has done timed run of the course, so while there aren’t many years of history to draw significance from, last year’s results help give context to the results. Last year on nearly the exact same date, Nathan Bernardo ran 42:20, and Hector Ramirez ran 43:17. The two repeated as the 1-2 combo for the team this year, running 40:32 and 41:04 respectively. Gustavo Aguilera at 42:09, and Inteus Castro-Lopez 42:59, are faster than the duo of Nathan and Hector was last year. Senior Jesse Chircop and and sophomore Azael Zamora ran strong times, turning in sub 44 performances themselves as well. Jesus Deloya was not far off running 44:27.

In my estimation, a time of under 44 minutes, is good for a time under 19 minutes at Montgomery Hill, giving these runners already respectable Varsity fitness in mid July. Vincent Giglio ran a time of 47:34, a strong debut time, and the best Freshmen time recorded in the 3 years since south rim has been contested as a timed run. Freshman Joseph Benitez also had a solid debut of 51:00 exactly.  Senior Kelvin Arenas ran 52:59 despite suffering a minor injury. Team mainstays, Gustavo Parra and Guillermo Villalobos struggled, but will look to shake off the performances and return to training to get ready fro the days that count. Austin Swank ran 54:15, and Tommy Do 58:35 to add depth to the team.

On the girls side, Freshmen Arlet Miranda had an outstanding debut, running 50:52, a time only bettered by Daniela Camacho last year. Elizabeth Guevara ran a strong 56:48, and was followed by freshmen Raquel Rodriguez in 56:49. This duo gives the team a strong punch to go behind Arlet and Maria Mendoza who is away on vacation. Daisy Nava, and Jennifer Custodio ran 1:03s, and Analilia Regla a 1:06 to get starting points for this season. The eventual returns of Andrea Ortiz and Gabriela Aguilar from Mexico will be crucial for the Varsity Girls in this year of transition, as will the possibility of Julia Cruz and Evalilia Garcia running for the team consistently this year.

The team is logging a lot of miles this summer in pursuit of a competitive season representing James Lick in The STAL (B League). Full results can be found below, stay tuned for more Comet news.
